Hi students!
Sorry about long time without write, I agree it was long time without anything interesting. Now I'm back, trying to help you keep your english up to date. We will study together, ok?!
Today, I was looking for something different to post here, and as I usually like to look inside BBC News, I've found this link above that helps you how to use the words 'Bottler or bottle' as kind of slang in British English informal language. However, take care to use it when you get your flight to Australia... It's a slippery slang!

This post is about the way of speaking years in English. That's not complicate, just a little bit different. I was distracted "walking around" BBC Learning English and I've found this link above. Coincidentally, this week more than one student has been asked me about this topic.
Now, I just ask you to read, listen the speaking together, and give me back your feeling about it. I'll not give you limit in lines, just ask you your feeling in some words.

Heloo fellas! (use Google translator to get the message faster, it's really important!!!)

Below I put a link about a music that should play more in the radio, but it's just in selected channels, or nobody notice about the things the music is talking about!
I'm in favor of our land, our planet, our house. And this is one of the reasons I use BIKE most of time. I know it's not enough yet, but I do my best to take care of my "house" earth!
I'm very proud about all the things I receive from this land I live, my beautiful city, nicest people surrounding me all the time, the nature I can see, enjoy, feel... birds, trees, flowers, animals, insects WATER, EARTH, SUN, RAIN... all small drops of happiness I receive everyday to make my life the best paint I've never seen before. Because of this I'm worry about the heating, the worlds temperature and specially my part on it! Long time ago this subject starts and we didn't noticed at all, it was just a strange movie on tv "mindwalk" 1983 (Ponto de Mutação - www.youtube.com), or a famous music by Michael Jackson "Heal the world" 1992 (Cure o mundo - http://letras.terra.com.br/michael-jackson/64241/traducao.html) and now it comes again to my ears by the project "Time for Climate Justice" http://en.alternativechannel.tv/communication-durable/videos/Time-4-Climate-Justice/Tck-tck-tck-Beds-burning/2602/;jsessionid=6E08D2570B958F9D9DC7F61BFBEAAC4E . Take a look at this last site, it has a lot to see and think about.
It has a long time they are calling our attencion... let's wake up and do something in favor!
So, I put the lyrics here, and on the links you can listen the musics and find the lyrics, some translation, watch the movie and the original campaign. However, it's not just to listen, or watch without any reason, it's to think about! It's to watch yourselves steps about the care you give to your land! The earth you live and the place which never ask you so much to give, but always provides you the best for your life! Food, water, animals, friends... everything comes from our planet!

Carlos says: between youth people
The correct preposition is: AMONG young people.

* This is because we use BETWEEN when we are talking about two things, and AMONG when we are talking about three or more things.

Here are some examples with BETWEEN:

BETWEEN you and me, I think he's an idiot.
The US is BETWEEN Mexico and Canada;
When you go to the movies, the kids sit between thir mother and father.

Here are some more examples about AMONG:

Essa é a melhor maneira de eu saber como vocês estão acompanhando o curso de Inglês. É um tipo de avaliação melhor do que uma prova, em minha opinião:

"Eu achei legal a coragem dele em falar desse jeito em frente a tantas pessoas e cameras, o cara é bom! Legal que ele tenta, vai assim mesmo e não desanima! Levando-se em consideração que, o mais importante ali é a negociação dos jogadores e, todo o resto sobre esse assunto, ele realmente não precisa se preocupar demais com o Inglês, é meio "tupiniquim" mas parece que todos ali entenderam o que ele disse e, ele entendeu as perguntas. É assim mesmo! Nota dez pra ele pela ousadia!"

"Time heals all wounds." - proverb

Time is an important word in English, and we have a lot of expressions to talk about it, and a lot of things to say about it. However, there´s some confusion about how to express time in English, specially, using prepositions: IN and ON. Here´s a short guide to help save time!

IN - used with: months, years, decades, centuries, and epochs:

E.G.: She was born in september;

She was born in 1958;

She was born in september 1958;

Ernest Hemingway lived in Paris in the 1920s;

Healthcare is much better today than it was in the 1700s;

In the Ace Age, many animals became extinct.

We also use "IN" with morning, afternoon, and evening:

I usually get up early in the morning.

In the afternoon, I like to take a short walk.

I sometimes go out in the evening.

"IN" is also used to talk about a period of time from the present to some period in the future, which can be anything from a second to thousand of years:

I´ll come help you in a second.

My brother is coming to visit me in a few days.

I´ll call you back in an hour.

She´s going to Japan in six months.

Her goal is to be a multimillionare in ten years.

I expect that in 100 years the world will be very different.

"AT" is used with specific times of day:

we have a meeting at two o' clock.

My train is at 4:30.

We also use "AT" with night and words like dawn and sunset:

- Seth like to look at the stars at night.

-Our baby wakes up at dwan and starts screaming and crying.

- The sky is beautiful at sunrise.

- I love to look out over the ocean at sunset.

Vocabulary:

extinct: describes something (frequently animals) that no longer exists

dawn/sunrise: when the sun comes up and starts the day.

sunset: When the sun goes down and starts the evening;

to scream: to make very loud and high sound like when you´re scared.

Este material recebi de um site chamado Parlo.com, muitos anos atrás, quando eu estudava inglês para a escola, ou simplesmente para dificultar minha mãe de ler os meus diários adolescentes. Não sei se ainda existe o site e, se o material é disponível - não executei pesquisa.
O assunto é interessante, gramatical, pouco usado, mas a dica é boa, pois se ouvires alguém falando alguma coisa com o "ish" no final, vai saber do que se trata!

MODERATE MODIFIERS

1- Se uma pessoa é: childish, ela é?
a) young;
b) immature;
c) small.
* respostas no final desta postagem, tente pensar e chutar uma das alternativas!

2- Feeling sick - dialogue

Tom: Are you okay? You look a bit yellowish!
Jerry: Yeah, I´m fine! I was sick a little bit last week, maybe that's why.
Tom: I´m feeling kind of sick myself. I think we both could use some rest.

What means yellowish in this case? Think about it before read the answer below.

O sufixo "-ish" pode ser usado no final de um adjetivo para dizer: um tanto quanto/de certo modo ou mais ou menos.

E.G.: "you look a bit yellowish!" você parece amarelado, mas não muito!

E.G.: " She´s prettyish with brown hair and eyes" - esse é um elogio que nenhuma mulher gosta muito de ouvir... o tal do "bonitinha" - feia arrumadinha! (lol)

O sufixo "-ish" também pode ser usado no final de um substantivo para formar um adjetivo que descreve com o que a pessoa, coisa ou ação se parece:

E.G.:"He has boyish charm."
EG.: " Peter is really childish sometimes."

Você pode ainda usar o "-ish" para falar sobre a idade aproximada de alguém, ou uma hora do dia:

E.G.:"Jacob is thirthyish and handsome."
E.G.:"I´ll see you around sevenish, then."

Exercises: Forme os adjetivos combinando com "-ish":

3- around eight o'clock: -----
4- somewhat old: ------
5- Like a fool: -----
6- around twenty years old: -----
7- somewhat gray: -----
8- like a man: ----

Vocabulary:

Charm: charme;
depressed: deprimido;
disappointed: decepcionado;
fool: boba;
immature: imaturo;
rude: grosso/rude.

*resposta: 1-b (uma pessoa é childish quando ela age como criança e, por isso é imatura!
** resposta: 2 - amarelado/ amarelo/sem graça sem cor;
3- eightish; 4- oldish; 5- foolish; 6- twentyish; 7- grayish; 8- mannish

Most Annoying Grammar Mistakes in English

Which of the following grammar mistakes annoys you the most?

1. Third conditional

"If I would have known about the party, I would have gone to it."

This is INCORRECT, although commonly used, especially in American English.
The correct form is:
If + had + past participle, would + have + past participle
* "If I had known about the party, I would have gone."
This is CORRECT.
2. Don't vs Doesn’t
"
He don’t care about me anymore."
This is INCORRECT.
Doesn't, does not, or does are used with the third person singular - words like he, she, and it.
Don't, do not, or do are used for other subjects.
* "He doesn’t care about me anymore."
This is CORRECT.
3. Bring vs Take
"When we go to the party on Saturday, let’s bring a bottle of wine."
This is INCORRECT.
When you are viewing the movement of something from the point of arrival, use “bring”:
* "When you come to the party, please bring a bottle of wine."
This is CORRECT.
When you are viewing the movement of something from the point of departure, use “take”:
* "When we go to the party, let’s take a bottle of wine."
This is CORRECT.
4. Fewer vs Less
Sign at the checkout of a supermarket: “Ten items or less”.
This is INCORRECT.
You can count the items, so you need to use the number word “fewer”. These nouns are countable.
*
"Ten items or fewer."
This is CORRECT.
If you can’t count the substance, then you should use “less”. These nouns are uncountable.
* "You should eat less meat."
This is CORRECT.
5. However
"We were supposed to go to the dance last night, however, it was cancelled because of lack of interest."
This is INCORRECT.
A semicolon, rather than a comma, should be used to link these two complete sentences:
* "We were supposed to go to the dance last night; however, it was cancelled because of lack of interest."
This is CORRECT.
It should be noted that there ARE situations in which you can use a comma instead of a semi-colon:
* "The match at Wimbledon, however, continued despite the bad weather."
This is CORRECT.
There is only one complete sentence in this example. It is not a compound sentence.
6. Have vs Of
"I never would of thought that he’d behave like that."
This is INCORRECT.
It should be would have:
* "I never would have/would’ve thought that he’d behave like that."
This is CORRECT.
It’s the same for should and could:
"He should of come with me."
This is INCORRECT.
* "He should have/should’ve come with me."
This is CORRECT.
"She could of had anything she wanted."
This is INCORRECT.
* "She could have had anything she wanted."
This is CORRECT.
7. Double negative

"I'm not speaking to nobody in this class."
This is INCORRECT.
Since 'not' is a negative, you cannot use 'nobody' in this sentence:
* "I'm not speaking to anybody in this class."
This is CORRECT.
8. Present perfect
"He has took
the train."
This is INCORRECT.
The correct form for the present perfect is:
would + have + past participle
* "He has taken the train."
This is CORRECT.
9. Went vs Gone
"I should have went to school yesterday."
This is INCORRECT.
The correct form is:
should + have + past participle

"I should have gone to school yesterday."
This is CORRECT.
10. Its vs It's
"Its going to be sunny tomorrow."
This is INCORRECT.
It’s is the contraction of It is:
* "It’s going to be sunny tomorrow."

Its is a possessive pronoun that modifies a noun:

Pobre de Espírito = Poor of Spirit - Sem nenhum segredo a tradução è ao pé da letra mesmo, segundo o site: http://www.sgny.org/printer_friend/print_gloss.htm que apresenta traduções de dizeres bíblicos e religiosos em português, inglês e frances! Bem eclético, culturalmente rico e interessante.

Let - é um verbo irregular cuja conjugação (presente - passado simples - passado perfeito) é igual para todas: Let, let, let! Que legal! Então porque "Let" sendo verbo, vem com outros verbos??? Bom, a explicação que achei foi a seguinte: Let faz "prepositional verbs" que são locuções como as Phrasal verbs mas que por serem assim diferentinhas, elas não aceitam nada no meio delas com a Phrasal ver que aceita um pronome no meio dos dois termos que a compõem. wanna / gonna
Wanna and gonna are frequently used in speech in informal colloquial English, particularly American English, instead of want to and going to. You will also see them used in writing in quotes of direct speech to show the conversational pronunciation of want to and going to.
Gonna to express the going to form of the future is used with first second and third person singular and plural. Note that in the interrogative, are is omitted in second person singular and first and second person plural
What we gonna do now? (= What are we going to do now?)
Don't know about you two. I'm gonna put my feet up and take a break.
We're gonna carry on and try and get there before dark.
What's he gonna wear on his wedding day? ~ I dunno. But he's gonna look real smart.
Wanna can be used with all persons singular and plural, except third person singular. This is because wanna scans with I want to, you want to, we want to, they want to, but not with he/she wants to where the final s is too intrusive:
What you wanna do now? (Instead of: What do you want to do now?)
I wanna go home. My mum and dad are waiting for me and they wanna go out.
You'll never give up gambling. I'm sure of that. ~ You wanna bet?(which means: Do you want to place a bet on that?)
a wannabee
This term derives originally from the US, but is now used extensively in British English. A wannabee (literally a want-to-be) is someone who is trying to copy somebody else. Usually the person they are trying to copy is somebody famous.
Scores of Britney Spears wannabees raided the shops where she had bought her latest outfit.
Gotta is used in a similar way to gonna and wanna, in this case to show the conversational pronunciation of have got to, or as informal alternatives to have to or must. It is not so much used in the interrogative:
Don't go out there tonight. It's really dangerous.
~ A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do
I gotta / I've gotta phone home right now. My mum'll be worried.
You gotta / You've gotta get changed right away. The match starts in five minutes.
Dunno, meaning I don't know is characteristic of very informal speech in British English. Note that the word stress in this expression is on the second syllable, whereas with gonna, gotta and wanna it is on the first syllable.
Are you going to college when you leave school? ~ Dunno!
Will you quit your job if they re-locate to Manchester? ~ I dunno.
When to use these expressions
You don't ever need to use these forms actively yourself, as a language learner. They may sound too informal if you do, although if other native speakers of English around you are using them, there is probably no reason why you shouldn't use them too, as you 'grow into them.' It is, of course, important to recognise and understand them.

Em uma das aulas precisávamos saber sobre o verbo forgive... e, pra dizer a verdade, surgiu um ponto de interrogação bem grande quando olhamos na minha gramática para confirmar se este era um verbo irregular ou não! tem muita gente que fala em espanhol... e estão indo pro chile... e lá eles tem uma "giria" americanizada que teve origem do verbo "to catch"... Eu não sei como se escreve a palavra em espanhol mas o significado é "entendeu?"... Ex: Alguém explica alguma coisa e no final pergunta se a pessoa entendeu...
Eles até comentaram que talvez tenha ligação com o "gotcha" (axo que é assim que se escreve), uma giria americana para o mesmo significado do "entendeu?"
Eles disseram que lá está sendo muito usado girias em inglês... outro exemplo é "fumaça".. eles chamam de smoke (e em espanhol é bem diferente)...

loan = an act of borrowing or lending something: "Thank you very much for the loan of your bike".

Nourish = (adj) A nourishing drink or food makes you healthy and strong: "Sweets aren't very nourishing".

LOL = internet abreviation for: laughing out loud: used when you think something is very funny.

BRB = internet abreviation for: be right back: used when you stop taking part in a discussion in a chat room for a short time.

Advices:

"I was thinking..." - às vezes é difícil fazer sugestões para pessoas que você não conhece (formal language). Uma maneira de fazer isso sem ser agressivo, ou mal interpretado é usando a sentença acima assim> " I was thinking we could + (base verb)..." soa melhor e, não é agressivo. Mesmo se alguém sugere algo que você não está afim de fazer pode usar esta expressão para propor algo diferente que você se agradaria e, talvez fosse mutuamente agradável! E, então você pode usar o Instead no final da frase para deixar claro que ao invés de (algo que foi sugerido) você sugere outra coisa...

At first I wanna give you some advices about prepositons: TO x FOR. Take a look at the text below:

Can you find any mistakes?

"I will talk for you about my country, Brazil. Many people think confusing things about it. For example: The Brazilian´s capital isnt´Buenos Aires, the correct is Brasilia. We speak portuguese , not Spanish. The popular music here isn´t only samba. Brazil´s people like bossa nova, pagode, sertaneja (like country music), rock and pop music. The Amazon Forest and the Pantanal (the two bigger reserves of life and differents species of the world) is in Brazilian territorry. The biggest cities are São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Come to visit us!"

Can you correct these mistakes if I tell you that:

We use TO when you say or give something TO someone directly! For example:

"I gave the present TO my mother!"

We use FOR when you do something in someone else´s place instead of that person! For example: "I´m going to the store FOR my mum."

Try it again now! And bring it to me if you need any help!

Blind date: kind of meeting with someone you don´t know in person yet;
To boast of - vangloriar-se;
Apathy - apatia;
To chat - conversar (de qualquer forma)
Date - encontro;
Enthusiasm - the same meaning in portuguese;
Karaoke bar - the same meaning in portuguese;
to start off with - começar com (algo/alguém);

R: - Sure, Whatever.

B. What words these two couple had been used to express friendly and unfriendly each other ? Share them.

Explanation:
To show some enthusiasm you can use:

* Great!
* Excellent!
* Awesome!
* Cool!

To show that you don´t care use:
* That sounds fine. / okay.
* Whatever.
* I don´t really care!
* it doesn´t matter.
The last two sentences is more heavy and can offend the other person.

Exercises:

Chose the best answer for the dialogue:

A. Your blind date is twenty years old than you. You like younger men/women. He suggests going to the yacht club for drinks. You probably say:
1- Cool!
2- That sounds fine.

B. Your date suggests going to a karaoke bar. Singing is your passion! You probably say:
1- Awesome!
2 - I don´t really care!

C. your date suggests two restaurants you don´t really like. You say:
1- That sounds great!
2- Either way. it doesn´t matter.

D. Your date can´t stop talking about herself. You are very bored. So when she suggests going to a quiet place to chat, You probably say:
1- Excellent!
2- Whatever.

E. Your date is your dream man/woman: handsome, intelligent, funny and you have the same taste in music. So when he asks you if you want to go to a concert next week, you say:
1- That sounds fun!
2- Whatever.

Queridos alunos!
Estou criando esse blog para facilitar a vida de vocês, assim podemos compartilhar dúvidas e conhecimentos que surgem durante as aulas e, quando estamos estudando fora da escola. Ou então, nessas idas e vindas da vida, onde nos deparamos com situações, cujo inglês torna-se a única saída.
Não sei ainda como vai estar meu tempo para lhes dizer qual será a periodicidade com que acrescentarei novas informações aqui para vocês. Mas certamente me certificarei de suas respostas e comentários com frequencia e, vai me trazer muita alegria, ver que você está participando desta página.
Esta primeira página será em português, as outras todas em inglês! E as regras são as seguintes:
